What is advocacy?
“Advocacy is a process to bring about change in the policies,
laws and practices of influential individuals, groups and

Advocacy work takes on many shapes. It is possible
to advocate for ourselves or for other people. Almost all
NGOs and CBOs already have had some experience of doing
advocacy work, even if they do not realize it, or do not use the
word ‘advocacy’. Advocacy can support other approaches by gaining
the assistance of people in power and changing the social
environment in which we work.
It is important to have a clear understanding of the differences between advocacy and other social development approaches such as information, education and communication (IEC) and community mobilisation.
Advocacy work can target people with influence at all levels,
from a district level government official to the International
